Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an attempt to return to the traditional sextet style and a more consistent, stronger album with a sharper edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature.
